Health Insurance Special Enrollment Period

Outside of Open Enrollment, Individuals who experience a life-changing event may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period or may be required to make an update to their coverage. Qualifying life changing events may include:
- Marriage

- Birth of a Child

- Losing other health coverage

- Adopting a child or placing a child for adoption

- Moving outside your insurer’s coverage area

- Gaining citizenship

- Leaving incarceration

- A change in income or household status that affects eligibility for premium tax credits or cost sharing reductions

- Applied during open enrollment, but were found ineligible for Medicaid.

What do I need when I come to enroll?


  • Social Security Numbers for all family members

  • 2014 Tax return

  • Employer and income information for every member of your household (example: pay stubs from the last 30 days, W-2s and documents from other sources of income)

  • Permanent resident card for all family members


  • *Non-Citizens who do not qualify are able to apply for family members who may be eligible.

This federal law focuses on consumer choices and protections and makes it easier and more affordable for individuals and families to enroll in health insurance.

    What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?


    A Marketplace is a website designed to help you apply for coverage, compare insurance options, and enroll in health coverage that is best for you and your family. Those who do not qualify for Medicare, Medicaid or employer-sponsored insurance, may be eligible for financial assistance to reduce the cost of monthly premiums and medical expenses.
