Participating in the 2020 Census

The 2020 Census is right around the corner and Greater Elgin Family Care Center (GEFCC) is strongly encouraging everyone to participate! The Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding are distributed to states and communities each year. Getting an accurate count of our communities will help Community Health Centers like GEFCC receive funding to continue providing the best care to our patients.

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau works to count every person in the country. An invitation will be sent to all homes inviting participants to respond either online, via phone call, or through a mailed questionnaire. Although the U.S. Census is mailed as an invitation, it is mandatory for recipients to fill out the Census once it is received.

Once the Census is completed, detailed responses given by responding household are turned into statistics. These statistics help the government create plans to distribute over $675 billion in annual local, state and federal funds aimed at helping communities throughout the U.S.

These funds help Greater Elgin Family Care Center continue to provide services to its patients, and as efficiently and effectively as they always have been. Government funds also allow GEFCC to provide patient care at a low cost, no matter what a patient’s ability to pay is.

Although the Census asks recipients to share sensitive information, by law the U.S. Census Bureau cannot release any identifiable information about you, your home, or your business – even to law enforcement agencies. This means that U.S. Census workers are forbidden from sharing addresses, names and/or birthdates with government law enforcement agencies.

Not only are Census workers forbidden from sharing this information, but no questions about citizenship will be on the 2020 Census. Allowable questions that been preapproved by Congress can be found at
